When you’re on a flight, whether you like your fellow passengers or not, you’re stuck with them.
Of course there are plenty of unwritten etiquette rules when you’re flying, not to mention other minefields such as the whole debate on whether you should recline your seat .
But it turns out that it’s not necessarily bad habits that have holidaymakers worried about who they will end up sat next to.
In fact, new research by HolidayPirates and HappyOrNot looking at what causes ‘air rage’ unveiled the worst passengers to be stuck next to, according to holidaymakers.
Topping the list? Bad body odour.
In fact, 60 per cent of those surveyed said that a person with poor personal hygiene is their worst passenger nightmare. (We’re assuming BO, although some people do have gross plane habits ).
Of course if it is bad BO, it can make you acutely aware of the fact you’re in a cabin with recycled air, and the journey suddenly seems to feel a lot longer.
It’s easy to think you’re helpless – but thankfully one flight attendant has shared nifty tricks for dealing with the situation , such as ordering a coffee to mask the smell.
But it’s not just personal hygiene which proved an issue for passengers.
Other unwanted armrest companions including stag dos and hen parties, babies, and strangers who want to talk.
Nick Cooper, Head of UK Market for HolidayPirates, comments: “We’ve all been there. You sit down for a long-haul flight, only for the person next to you to barge you off the armrest, kick off his or her shoes, and start asking probing questions when all you want to do is relax.
“We wanted to ask our users about their experiences in order to tell them they’re not alone! We’ve all had unpleasant air travel episodes, but as the preamble to amazing holidays, it’s always worth it.”
