Disney princesses have been around for more than 80 years already, which means that several generations of girls have been obsessing over them, taking on many of their traits. Disney princesses aren’t perfect — they all have their strengths and weaknesses, and there’s something to learn from every one of them.

It’s hard to deny how important it is for young girls to have a positive female figure in their lives. YouGov conducted research on Disney princesses that revealed who people think is the best role model for girls, and Bright Side is excited to share the results with you.

14. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty, 1959)

It’s no surprise that only 34% of participants thought Aurora was a good role model, and 9% highly doubted it. She only appeared on screen for 18 minutes of the whole movie and did literally nothing.

We believe the kind, sweet Aurora has good potential, but the story just didn’t give her a chance.

13. Ariel (The Little Mermaid, 1989)

Only 41% of the people thought that Ariel made a good role model and 12% thought she was a bad one.

Although she’s stubborn, curious, and independent, Ariel is often criticized for leaving her family for someone she didn’t even know. And this light-mindedness is what put her in second-to-last place.

12. Cinderella (Cinderella, 1950)

44% of the participants said Cinderella made a good role model and 11% thought the opposite.

The image of Cinderella is quite controversial nowadays. She’s criticized by many feminists for not being able to stand up for herself in front of her abusive stepmother and sisters and for needing a man to rescue her. At the same time, nobody can deny that she’s kind to everyone and has the temper and manners of a true lady.

11. Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937)

The first-ever Disney princess, Snow White takes eleventh place with 44% of people declaring she was a good role model. However, 10% still thought she’s was a bad one.

What people find bad about her is that she’s too naive and trusting of strangers. On the other hand, she’s kind and positive and does her business with joy and a smile on her face, which is definitely something to look up to.

10. Jasmine (Aladdin, 1992)

44% thought Jasmine was a good role model and only 4% thought she wasn’t.

Jasmine has definitely got character. She’s independent and realistic, fights for her truth, and highlights that she’s not a prize to win. She teaches girls to stand up for themselves, but at the same time, is a little whiny and stubborn.

9. Elsa (Frozen, 2013)

The world’s favorite, Elsa, is considered to be a good role model for young girls as 46% of the respondents voted for her — only 7% didn’t think she was fit.

Although Elsa tries to protect her sister, she’s being selfish by shutting her out while knowing how traumatizing it is for her. Elsa was fighting her demons her whole life and proved her inner strength. But what Elsa teaches us is that we should try to find out who we are and always stay true to ourselves and our hearts.

8. Anna (Frozen, 2013)

Anna earned 49% of the people who thought she’d make a good role model while 5% thought she was a bad one.

Although Anna can be a little extra from time to time and driven by her emotions, she’s fearless, emotional, and clumsy, which many girls can identify with. She’s totally selfless and a great example of someone who shows support and unconditional love.

7. Rapunzel (Tangled, 2010)

Rapunzel is probably one of the most positive princesses as 57% thought she’d make a good role model and 4% thought the opposite.

Even though she was told her whole life how dangerous the world was, she still kept her faith in humanity and thought the best of people. She’s a little naive but is a great example of how we should believe in people and how everyone deserves a second chance.

6. Pocahontas (Pocahontas, 1995)

With Pocahontas, it’s 57% against 2%.

She’s a very strong female protagonist and is in touch with nature which is a good thing to show kids nowadays. And although she somewhat endangers her people due to her curiosity, she fights for peace and stays loyal to them.

5. Belle (Beauty and the Beast, 1991)

With Belle, it’s 58% against 5%.

Belle has the ability to see beyond one’s appearance and peers straight into the heart, and it’s one of the greatest lessons everyone should learn. She doesn’t fall in love easily at first sight or fall for a pretty face. Her love grows as she gets to know the Beast better and sees the good in things — even in what the Beast couldn’t see within himself — and gently changes him for the better.

4. Tiana (The Princess and the Frog, 2009)

60% say Tiana is a good role model and 3% claim she’s a bad one.

Tiana is passionate about everything she does and dreams. Unlike other princesses, she didn’t have a lot and had to work hard to get what she wanted. Moreover, she didn’t fantasize about wealth but instead, dreamt about doing what she loved with all her heart.

3. Merida (Brave, 2012)

Third place goes to Merida, with 66% thinking she’d make a good role model and only 2% disagreeing.

Merida taught us that everyone has the right and ability to change their destiny. She fought for her right to choose and broke traditions to make things better. And although she makes mistakes, she proves it’s important to raise your voice and stand up for yourself.

2. Mulan (Mulan, 1998)

68% agreed that Mulan was a good role model for girls, and just 2% had a different opinion.

She proved to everyone that girls can do anything they want and be whoever they want, even if others doubt that. She’s definitely the bravest of all the princesses and does what she wants not because she’s fearless, but in spite of that, and because she knew it was right.

1. Moana (Moana, 2016)

The princess who people think is the best role model is Moana, with 72% voting in her favor and only 2% disagreeing.

First of all, Moana is a princess with the most realistic body type among the princess gang. Beyond that, she’s respectful toward her parents and older people, she encourages others, and has her own aspirations that she’s capable of reaching herself.

Do you agree with the list? Who do you think is the best role model among the Disney princesses and who’s your favorite? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below — we want your opinion!
